About Our Organization
What is the goal of Trails of Freedom?
Trails of Freedom is dedicated to promoting sustainable travel by producing video documentaries of the incredible places we visit. We want to inspire people to experience the true beauty of nature and convince them that our world is worth protecting.
How did Trails of Freedom get started?
In March 2009, four of us set out for a spring break adventure on the island of Maui. Sometime during this trip, hiking and travelling became more than just a hobby — it became a lifestyle. Thus, Trails of Freedom was born.
Where are you located?
We currently have teams located at both our home base in Honolulu, Hawaii and an East Coast Division stationed in Southington, Connecticut.
How often do you hike?
Each team goes on at least one hike a week. In addition to these local day-hikes, Trails of Freedom takes week-long trips to other destinations, including visiting our National Parks at least three or four times a year.
How can I get involved?
If you would like to join us for a hike or recommend one of your own favorite hikes, visit the Contact Us page or email Leigh Anne at lcrocco@hawaii.edu.
Preparing for Your Hike
What are some important things I should bring with me on a hike?
Proper footwear is essential. We recommend boots that come up above your ankles, reducing the risk of injury.
Water is perhaps the most important item to bring on a hike. Stay hydrated by packing enough water to last the entire length of your hike.
High energy food such as protein bars are another must have. Some of our favorites include Clif bars, Clif Shot Blocks, dehydrated fruit, trail mix and energy gels.
Lastly, make sure to dress in layers. This will prepare you for all weather conditions and temperatures. Don’t forget a windbreaker and a raincoat — two Trails of Freedom wardrobe must haves!
Do I have to be in good shape?
There are hikes that are suitable for all skill levels. Trails of Freedom encourages people to go out and give it a try. We feel people often do not know what they are capable of until they do it. Start with some of the shorter, less strenuous hikes to see if hiking is something you would like to pursue.
How can I train?
Cardio workouts are a good way to build stamina, but the only real way to become a strong hiker is to go hiking! We suggest you start with some of the easier trails, and work your way up to some of the more challenging adventures.
