Located in the 24,000 acre Pachaug State Forest, the trail through the Rhododendron Sanctuary is only a short half-mile, but visiting while the Rhododendrons are in full bloom can prove to be an amazing experience. Every year from the end of June to late July, the giant Rosebay rhododendrons produce brilliant white and pink flowers, some rising up to 30 feet above the forest floor. The wooden boardwalk trail that winds through the lush green forest is wheelchair accessible, allowing visitors of all abilities the chance to see one of Pachaug’s real gems.

Follow the map below to Route 49 North. After turning onto Rt. 49 N, drive approximately 0.9 miles. The entrance to Pachaug State Forest will be on the left. Follow the park road 0.8 miles, staying left at the fork, to arrive at the Chapman Area parking lot. The sign for the trailhead will be on the right.

Located in the 24,000 acre Pachaug State Forest, Mount Misery remains as one of the most popular trails in the area. Its low elevation of 441 feet allows hikers of all abilities to reach its twin summits, providing expansive views of Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Pachaug State Forest: Green Falls Area

While exploring Pachaug State Forest, travel a few minutes down the road to the Green Falls Area. This section of Pachaug is equally as beautiful, offering additional hiking trails, including a great loop trail circling the picturesque Green Falls Pond.

Hopeville Pond State Park

A serene pond with a historic background, Hopeville Pond State Park offers great fishing, camping, and a number of other fun recreational activities.
